High in the alpine winter of the Colorado Mountains I found a series of snow covered indentations and bumps amongst the great expanse of ridge top moraine. There were roughly 5 bumps in the snow each about an inch or two in height and potentially containing ptarmigans hiding under the snowy blanket waiting out the storm. Ptarmigan will fly from a feeding area up into the alpine and plunge themselves into the snowy hillside and bury themselves for safety. As I neared these small bumps, one of the ptarmigan popped his little head out and looked my direction. There was no need for me to move closer and so the little bird remained comfortable as he spent at least a half hour just hanging out with me and my camera lens.
