The Mountain Goats

This has to be my favorite photograph from 2023. I was hiking the High line Trail in Glacier National Park heading back to my Van when a few rocks came tumbling down a couple feet in front of me. I  backed up slowly while looking up to see what caused the disturbance. It was then a baby Mountain Goat peeked its head out over the cliff.  Then another baby looked over the edge and about a minute later, mom did as well. I raised by camera but only had wide angle lens with me. I framed up the image showing the perspective of their environment in addition to the yellowing skies from smoke haze and last remaining light of sunset. All things came together here and I couldn’t be happier I only had a wide angle lens that evening. The special part was that I was on my way back to my van after putting in a 15 mile hike and not seeing a thing, then this happened! Some things are meant to be.
