Winter Leos

In the cold of winter after a fresh dry Colorado snow, a pair of LEO’s Long Eared Owls rest in anticipation of the evening hunt. LEO’s like many other owls rest in the shade all day and when the light starts to dim, then begin to stretch and preen for their evening adventures. Pictured is a pair in late afternoon just sleeping away. They would open their eyes only momentarily before resting again. I love this image for several reasons but mainly because theses owls roost often in Russian Olive Trees (as seen here) which are notorious for always having a branch in the way… so capturing a clean image of one of these owls is rather tricky. I was super lucky here because they were roosted at the edge of a small cleaning without ton of branches interfering with my view and I was able to stand on the other side and get a clean shot.
