High up in the Moraine Meadows toward summers end when the wildflowers are in full bloom, you might see the occasional velvet bull elk grazing the lush grasses avoiding the heat of the low lands. It’s a rare occurrence and even rarer to be close to them with spooking off. These elk spent a good deal of time with me and got to be familiar with my scent and knew I wasn’t posing a threat to them. This image came to fruition after a strenuous predawn hike into the high country with the hope of finding giant velvet bulls in time for sunrise. I places myself in their pathway amongst the alpine flowers and just waited for the shot.
